Cryogenic Services

Cryogenic treatment of high carbon tool steel rolls, such as E52100, completes the hardening transformation and assures the complete elimination of retained austenite in the martensitic microstructure. This is performed in a computer controlled chamber by slowly lowering the roll's temperature to -150°F and holding for an appropriate period of time before returning it to ambient temperature. This "super cold" treatment guarantees the roll's dimensional stability for more precise finish tolerances and improved surface wear resistance.

Progressive Spinning

"Uni-Max" is a roll hardening process developed at Penna-Flame. The roll is rotated while the heat unit scans horizontally or vertically. "Uni-Max" utilizes infrared measurement of surface temperature and subsequent computer control to maximize surface hardness and case depth uniformity.

A custom-designed ring-burner encircles the part. The coupling distance between the part and flame-head and number of heating tips is determined by the material, hardness and case-depth requirements. Following the heating ring is the quench. As the part rotates, the heating ring and quench is traversed across the face of the roll at a given speed. For years, this has been adequate, and for many applications, it still is.

Straightening

Because all metals tend to distort during the heat treating process it is sometimes necessary to straighten after flame hardening. This 290 ton press allows us to cold or hot straighten parts so that only a minimum amount of grinding is necessary.

Tempering

Tempering is necessary to complete the hardening process. Untempered martensite can prove to be detrimental to the life of the roll. Each roll is tempered to the required hardness, then inspected. Each and every roll is checked for surface hardness, magnetic particle inspected then non-destructively evaluated for case depth. All rolls are guaranteed to meet specification.

The Results

A consistent surface hardness, and a deep, uniform hardened case, with the stable martensite structure. Ready for finishing, to the tightest customer specifications.
