Roll Manufacturing

The roll manufacturing process typically begins with domestically produced raw materials. Rough turning is then completed in a manner that reduces machining stresses and helps with distortion control during the hardening process. Once the rolls are heat treated, they go through precision CNC machining, milling, grinding, and polishing, depending on the finish the roll requires.

Roll finishes are dictated by the roll’s application...many require chrome plating while others require polyurethane, carboxilated nitrile, plain ground, or a polished finish.  PFI and its partners are equipped to provide you with the finish and/or coating your application requires.

Applications:

  • Pinch Rolls
  • Work Rolls
  • Leveler Rolls
  • Washer Rolls
  • Squeegee Rolls
  • Paper Mill Rolls
  • Feed Rolls
  • Flattener Rolls
  • Fabricated Tubes
  • Embossing Rolls
  • Peeler Rolls
  • Conveyer Rolls
  • Back-Up Rolls
  • Straightener Rolls
  • Hold Down Rolls
  • Table Rolls
  • Pickling Rolls
  • Many, Many More!

Roll Flame Hardening

The roll flame hardening process at PFI begins with the review of all pertinent information necessary to choose the proper hardening parameters, and this can include material certifications.  Variables in some of the chemical elements can affect parameters such as case depth, surface hardness, and tempering temperature.  All parameters, including  preheat, austenizing (hardening) temperature, speed, and quench pressures are computer controlled and digitally monitored to ensure maximum surface hardness and case depth uniformity.  This is critical to providing you the highest-quality hardening process.

Penna Flame utilizes tempering furnaces to evenly heat and expand the bores of wheels/trunnions. Once they're at the appropriate temperature and expanded bore size, the wheel/trunnion is placed on a custom manufactured fixture, and the shaft is lowered vertically into the bore. The fixture is built so that the shaft stops at the proper location on the wheel / trunnion. The temperature of each part is allowed to equalize before the assembly is moved allow for the next set.

Simply ship us your wheels / trunnions and shafts for heat treating and assembly or allow PFI Partners to manufacture the entire assembly. This reduces time, saves money in freight and gives you peace of mind by using a single-source supplier.

Applications:

  • Wheels
  • Trunnions
  • Axles
  • Shafts
