History of Penna Flame
PAST
Garrett D. Orr built the foundation for his future in Erie, Pennsylvania where he maintained high honors and was a five-sport letterman in his senior year at Erie Prep. He was inducted into the Erie Hall of Fame in 1995. Garrett then attended Duquesne University where he played football, attended classes and worked evenings.
In 1968, after several years in the retail shoe industry, Garrett founded Pennsylvania Flame Hardening. At the age of 39 he formed the foundation on which Penna Flame Industries was built.
Garrett passed away in 1992. He is survived by his wife, Mary Patricia, and two sons; Garrett D. Orr, Jr. and James P. Orr.
PRESENT
James P. Orr began his career at Penna Flame Industries with a broom in his hand. As a student at North Catholic High School and John Carroll University, Jim would spend weekends and summers learning the family business by cleaning the shop floor, helping maintenance, landscaping, or operating a flame hardening machine. In 1983 he joined the company full time and embraced a role on the management team.
Jim assumed his current role as President of Penna Flame Industries in 1990. His vision for future growth and development and his dedication to quality and traceability has put Penna Flame Industries at the top of the flame hardening industry.
FUTURE
After flame hardening their way through Seneca Valley High School and Penn State University Jim’s two sons, Michael and Andrew, joined the Penna Flame Family as well. They currently serve as the Robotics Division Manager (Michael) and in the Sales/Customer Service Department (Andrew). With their early foundation of knowledge and their willingness to learn and grow, the future of Penna Flame Industries is in very capable hands.
